Home / What we do / Bipolar IOP
Bipolar disorderBipolar IOP for adults, by video, in the evening.
A virtual intensive outpatient program for adults living with bipolar disorder. Groups Monday to Friday, 5:30 to 8:30 PM Pacific, plus a weekly individual session.
An IOP is not the level of care for acute mania.
Acute mania and psychosis need a higher level of care than an outpatient program. So does anyone who is not safe at home. The clinical screen decides level of care before anything else, and it sometimes sends people elsewhere. If you are in crisis now, call 988 or go to an emergency room.
Stable enough for outpatient, not stable enough for weekly therapy alone.
A fit
Diagnosed, safe at home, working with a prescriber, and needing more structure than one hour a week gives.
Not a fit today
Acute mania, psychosis, active danger to yourself or anyone else, or a need for 24-hour supervision.
We coordinate, we do not take over.
Our medical director, Charles Carpenter, MD, reviews what you already take. With your written consent he coordinates with the prescriber you already have. We do not start, stop or change a bipolar medication on our own.
Two different programs.

What people ask first.
Can an IOP treat bipolar disorder?
An IOP can hold the therapy, the structure and the relapse planning. It is not the setting for acute mania. The clinical screen decides your level of care.
Do I have to change prescribers to join?
No. Keep the prescriber you have. With your written consent our medical director coordinates with them.
What if I am also drinking or using?
In California substance use and co-occurring mental health are treated by the same team, at the same time.
What if the screen says I need more than an IOP?
We tell you plainly and point you to the level of care that fits. We would rather lose an admission than take one we should not.
What will it cost?
Out of network with commercial PPO plans. We read your plan the same business day and send a written estimate before your first session. Not Medicaid or Medicare today.
Is it confidential?
Yes. 42 CFR Part 2 protects substance use treatment records, and nothing is shared without your written consent.
