Home / Embark alternative
Comparing virtual IOPsShift as an Embark Behavioral Health alternative for adults.
Both run virtual intensive outpatient programs. They serve different ages. Here is the plain difference, from each program's own published information.
Age.
Embark's site calls its care mental health treatment for youth, adolescents, teens and young adults. Its IOP page lists ages as teens and young adults, varying by location. Shift serves adults. If the person who needs help is a teenager, Embark is the right call and we are not.
The short comparison.
Shift Support Network

Hybrid: weekly care by secure video, optional in-person intensives in California.
Out of network with commercial PPO plans. Benefits checked the same business day, cost in writing before the first session.
California DHCS certification 191663AP. Mental health IOP also for people in New York and New Jersey.
Embark Behavioral Health
Its site says teens and young adults, ages varying by location. Its outcome charts run from 12 to 28.
Its site positions the program as mental health treatment, with substance use listed among the conditions.
Its virtual IOP page says three hours a day, four days a week, on a 12-week curriculum. Groups capped at ten, two therapists each.
Its site says virtual and in-person outpatient care plus residential. More than 30 outpatient centers and inpatient programs.
Its site says it accepts hundreds of insurance plans in all 50 states. It publishes in-network options as well as out-of-network ones.
Its site says Medicaid is accepted only through a few payors at its Calo program.
How to choose.
When is Embark the better fit?
If the person is a teenager, or if family work is the centre of it. Also if you need an in-network program. Its site publishes a residential option, which we do not run.
When is Shift the better fit?
If you are a working adult with a PPO plan, and substance use is part of the picture. Groups start at 5:30 PM Pacific so the workday stays yours.
Is Shift part of Embark?
No. Shift Support Network is an independent program run by Vanguard Labs LLC. It is not affiliated with Embark Behavioral Health.
My adult child finished a teen program. Can they move to Shift?
If they are an adult, yes. Tell us where they are in treatment on the clinical screen. With written consent we coordinate with the prior clinician.
Do you take Medicaid or Medicare?
Not today. We are out of network with commercial PPO plans, and we read your plan the same business day.
How fast can I start?
Benefits checked the same business day. Intake is usually the next business day.
